Hair Growth During Menopause

Hair Growth During Menopause

Excessive hair growth can happen at any time in life, with triggers caused by medical conditions such as PCOS, steroid treatment medication and more. It's also one of the first symptoms of Menopause and often happens in the early stages of peri-menopausal women.

Changes in hair growth can be stressful and lead to a decrease in feelings of femininity. It is important to remember that excess hair growth is a common part of menopause and even without intervention the hair may reduce and even fall out. In cases of persistent or rapid hair growth, there are several intervention treatments that we can offer.

Hormonal fluctuations are the root trigger to the development of excessive hair growth. You may start to notice that your regular waxing treatments are needed more frequently or that your bikini line is extending down your thigh. This is normally manageable and doesn't create too much insecurity. However, hair growth may also develop facially on the chin, jawline and upper lip. Unfortunately this type of hair growth can be strong, course and dark in colour, making it difficult to hide.Face the Future can help with a wide selection of hair removal treatments. The individual treatments are recommended dependent on the colour, texture and placement of the hair.

Laser hair removal

Laser hair removal is a very popular choice for many patients, however many people are unaware that this is only suitable for hair that contains a strong pigment called melanin, so black or dark brown hair. Laser hair removal is a popular choice for this hair type due to fast, effective and mostly pain-free results. As we age, the pigment cells in hair follicles decrease and gradually die. When a hair follicle contains fewer pigment cells the strand of hair contains less melanin and becomes a transparent colour such as grey, silver, or white.

Electrolysis

If your hair is white, grey, blonde or red, then laser treatment will not catch the hair and another form of hair removal is required. An effective alternative to laser is electrolysis.Despite treatment taking slightly longer to see a result, it is a very popular treatment in our CQC regulated clinic. Electrolysis is in fact the only method of permanent hair removal and is particularly useful for small areas of growth such as the chin and lip.
