Global Running Day: Can Running Be A Form Of Self-Care?

Running can be some people’s best form of treating themselves to some self-care. Whether it’s a short run or long distance, you are able to release any stressful thoughts and focus on your running.

Global Running Day is nearly here, and we have our owner, Julia, telling us all about how she began her running journey and the tips she has for beginners or those who are thinking about adding a session into their self-care regime.

Running since she was young, then having a break, into Julia’s adulthood she found her love for her daily running sessions again. Turning that love into a form of self-care allows her to enjoy and reflect whilst exercising.

Why do you like running?

I used to do long distance running as a child when I lived in South Africa but got out of the habit when I moved back to England. I started again about 14 years ago after I had my 2 children, and I didn’t have the time to drive to a gym and then complete a class or do a session.  By running, I could start exercising the minute I left the house. I’ve never caught the running bug or been able to say that I love running, but it’s definitely a means to an end. For me, it’s the most time efficient form of cardio and now I get to exercise my dog at the same time, so I also get to multitask!

How does it improve your life?

Running helps me clear my head and have uninterrupted time away from work, children etc. I get the opportunity to think things through, deal with my emotions and release tensions. I’ve had quite a lot going on outside of work and exercising has enabled me to manage this.

How often do you run and where do you like to run?

I run at least twice a week, more if I don’t see my trainer. I try to exercise 5 times a week and have lots of dog walks. I love running on a morning around where I live. I’m really fortunate that I’m surrounded by fields, country lanes and forest so it’s such a peaceful place to run and lose yourself (and the dog, as she runs off lead and can disappear if she smells something interesting). I get to see a lot of animals and nature where I run and it’s the simple things like seeing a family of deer that make me happy for the rest of the day.

Do you have any tips for beginner runners?

Don’t be afraid to run a bit and then walk for a bit. When I first started, I would run for a certain distance and then walk a certain distance. After my knee ops I started running again just by doing a minute run and minute walk and repeating that for 10 mins.  I slowly increased the length of time that I exercised and the length of time I ran for.  I’d recommend that if you’re starting out, do what you are comfortable with but set yourself goals and push yourself. On my first run after having the children I thought I was dying and looked at my tracker to see that I’d only run about 200m - I had a little word with myself and carried on! I’ve had friends successfully use the couch to 5k app and I get the impression it’s similar to what I did, I just didn’t have the app to guide me.

Do you have any skincare tips for runners?

14 years ago, I had no skincare tips for running and I’m paying the price now!  I have what I call ‘runners’ chest’ which basically is a red decolletage from wearing round tops and no SPF - I’m really conscious of it.  My best skincare tips would be to always use an SPF, and not just on your face. I wish someone had told me that years ago, but I thought ‘we’re in England, I don’t need to cover up'. I’d also recommend double cleansing after your run to remove any sweat and dirt, and then rehydrating your face with a Hyaluronic Acid or a mist and a good moisturiser. Don’t forgot your lips too, these can get dry and chapped when running so I like to put a bit of balm on to help hydrate them too.
